The day Michelle and Richard were married, it was so hot my black cloth shoes faded several shades. But we found the super blue Columbia river, and everyone was keen to dip their toes in the cold. It made for some wonderfully candid smiles and a totally relaxed photo session. Sister Sue made good on the nanaimo bars that Michelle noted in the do-not-forget list, and Richard definitely did not forget the beer cooler–even though it wasn’t on the list. What a totally refreshing start to their lives together. See Michelle and Richard’s e-session, with their blue eyed baby Daniel here.)

These are Michelle’s parents. She is from Mexico, and he is from Italy. I love the lines on his face in contrast to the smoothness of hers in the next photo. And of course, Michelle looking for mom’s approval in the next one! Don’t we all look at our moms like that? I know I do if I think I’m wearing somethin’ pretty!

Something’s happening in the basement.

Kootenay Coop Radio is bringing back the basement show. A few weeks ago, punky poppers Love Cuts, along with Forced Laugh and Nelsonite April O’Neil, rocked the foundation of the little station that could. I sincerely hope this small town rock n’roll will happen again soon.

some awesomeness from the last day of treefort. more to come when my head stops spinning!

my only regret from the festival is that i did not shoot what turned out to be my favourite band from the weekend, and and and. perhaps that’s why i loved them so much. or, it could be because, even before i saw this video (in my late night obsession, after driving 12 hours, to find out everything i could about them), they sang about dirt and building houses and sword fights and sadness. UGH. big props, portland boys. i heart you.

Kootenay Music Awards

On March 30, Kootenay Quickshot will present the first ever Kootenay Music Awards. I’ve shot a few of the artists being featured, and some of these will be playing during a slideshow at the event: Savage Blade, Datura, Alone Against Rome (both at their first show ever and when they opened for Savage Blade in May 2011) and the lovely Rhoneil at an intimate house show. Enjoy!

Their kitchen is filled with pans of fried chicken and mason jars brimming with power jam and hand rolled imperfect bagels and platinum blonde babies. Cork boards are covered in thumbtacked photos of Tony with long curly hair. Of Pam with no hair.

Once her sunflowers bloom, Pam has time to walk across the highway in her flip flops and jump in the lake. Tony builds the deck, shirtless in the blazing sun.

Pam is from the prairies. Tony’s from the mountains. They’ve been together and apart and together, forever, again. Tony’s mom, Louisa, looks at me with serene eyes and says, ‘He loved her from the second he saw her.’

Waiting outside for the ladies to arrive, a storm swung down the valley, skirted the wedding site, and carried on its way. (Previous 2 and next 1 by the outstanding Buffy Goodman.)

And then the fiddlers and the bassist and the caller all came… and we swooped under arms and held hands and jumped and jigged…. and I think everything was right in the world, for a little while.

Darci & Kim: Adventure Alley, Nelson BC

Nelson BC is known for its adventuresome inhabitants. Hence my desire to live here, and to photograph them…. especially when they’re wearing pretty dresses and handsome suits, and don’t mind a little trespassing. Not that we trespassed anywhere, but y’know—I like couples that are at least willing to investigate.

I knew this was gonna be a fun day when Darci’s mom tried to pull some strings with the RCMP to close down a bridge…. it didn’t happen, but it’s the thought that counts. Meet Darci and Kim.

Meet Beth and Mike. When they asked me to shoot their wedding, I was rather excited. You see, they’re an exceptionally cute couple and infinitely creative. Mike is pretty adorable with those darn dimples, and Beth is hilarious and beautiful. She’s an artist and creator–and knows a thing or two about putting little critters into glass containers, wearing false teeth and taxidermy. Their wedding was incredibly fun and so unique to them. Mike’s parents hosted the lakeside outdoor party, complete with homemade iced cappuccinos and bocce ball.

Beth made her dress, and her bridesmaids had to sew her into it.

Yep, yet another take on American Gothic. I think this one’s my favourite. The gas can was Beth’s idea. Who doesn’t love a girl willing to carry a jerry can in her wedding dress?!

Yes, the top left one does say “best facial hair.”

And they did the cake thing right–there was about 6 of those delectable things, homemade by one of Beth’s lifetime friends, whose wedding I’ll post in a couple weeks!

Post-cake extravaganza, after Beth wiped it off her neck and Mike off his chin, they brought out the moustaches. The following montage was Jay’s brilliant idea.
