Crank it to 6 Concert Series: Ben Rogers and King Cominco

Ben Roger‘s voice is still roaming around in my head. It’s a low reverb, just above my left ear and above the soft palette. He has a young smile and playful eyes, but his lyrics betray an older, darker something in his chest.

Ben’s dog, Ellie, never left his side. She managed to find his boots wherever they went, despite the several dozen she had to navigate every time he moved.

King Cominco, a new project by Jake, Sean and Marty (do we need last names? I don’t think so.) Part Explosions in the Sky with a hint of blues, it’s a refreshing effort from 3 talented dudes who’ve been separate parts of various music projects. I think “the sum is greater than its parts” applies here.

This also applies to the babies who graced the Special.

Heavy Metal Photographer: Cauldron!

Yep, Cauldron came to Nelson. Classic, clean heavy metal. Complete with some banging bangs and a double bullet belt. Though the turn out was a little lacklustre, the crew from Toronto en route to Vancouver didn’t hold back. This is what it looked like.

nancy and kelvin were married in August 2012 at Point Lookout near Camden, Maine. i was really excited to travel across the continent to spend a couple days documenting this amazing time in their lives. so excited, that i booked my rental car for portland… oregon.

despite this oversight, i knew it would be a successful trip when the sales rep, at 12:17 in the morning–after trying for 37 minutes to find me a booking on a long weekend in a tourist haven–found me a car. and it was in that car that i drove through some of the most beautiful countryside i’ve ever seen, and had an incredibly inspiring weekend with people i had never met. despite worrisome rain that threatened to end oceanside plans, and some defiant bow ties, it all worked out in the end.

Portland, Maine Engagement

I had the distinct pleasure of flying across the continent to photograph Nancy and Kelvin’s wedding.

We spent the day together in the lovely little oceanside town of Camden. I got to hold a lobster, IN MY HANDS. This was an exciting moment for me. Camden also helped me to understand linen shirts and dockers. I never had a hankering for ocean-influenced fashion. But as soon as I set foot in Camden, I desperately needed navy stripes. The town has quite the influence.

It was also exceptionally exciting to finally meet Nancy and Kelvin—they’re adorably in love. They were both so excited to get married and share their amazing plans for the future with their closest friends and family, it was contagious even over the phone. Camden is close to their hearts, and I could immediately see why. Bookstores and boats, beautiful seashore walks and antique stores… the town is nothing short of quaint and peaceful. It was the ideal setting for their lifestyle photos. We spent the day walking around town and getting to know each other, then we drove up to Point Lookout for the rehearsal. And then Nancy and her bridesmaids made their bouquets and centerpieces. Then we went bowling!

I should add here that Nancy and Kelvin thought of everything. They made everything. And it was nothing short of incredible.

I understand why some couples just want the DVD or USB stick of their images. What breaks my heart however, is thinking that drive will sit in your desk, buried beneath elastics and dry pens and sticky tab pads. This is why you need to think about what you want from your photographer.

Jay and I had been searching for a home for three years. When we walked into this one, we knew immediately it was ours. Our one goal in moving to Nelson BC was to have a live music venue in our house. Little did we know the house already had its own music history, and we were just here to perpetuate it with help from some new friends–Nelson from Nelson and Chad Hansen.

Here’s a scene from last night, the first official Half Stack / Crank it to 6 (name TBD) Concert Series at the Special. It’s the beloved Nelson and Jay, putting their heads together and making this little dream scheme work.
