it was dreary outside. rain pelted, waned and tapped the single pane glass of our old house’s windows all day. it was the perfect day for hunkering down on the couch. scratchy folk records pirouetting in the background as i flipped thru already-read magazines. my dog breathing heavy on the floor.
then solid footsteps on the porch. it was cam penner and john wood. subdued hello, warm smiles and a simple handshake. the room suddenly full of new, confirmed by harlan’s busy nose. cam’s vibrant presence. john’s fluid movements.
i slipped upstairs, content to listen to half-finished measures, single kick drum beats, and quick confirmations transform our front room into a stage. harlan lay beside me, ears perking to familiar and new voices as they arrived.
finally, it was time to really listen. cam kicked, hit, tickled and caressed. an honest voice wrapped ’round the back of our heads, tugged the ear and sat us back on our laurels. intention. honesty. kindness. intensity. convincing us reality is alright.
el gordo warmed the special for this edition of the crank it to 6!! concert series.
